Please take a note of our festive opening hours below:
Both the MerlinVet UK/Export office and the MerlinVet-cel office will be open as usual up to and including 24th December. We will then be closed on the 25th & 26th December, with us operating normally on the 27th, 30th and 31st December. We will be closed on the 1st and 2nd January, reopening on 3rd January 2025.

The last day for placing orders through MerlinVet UK for normal products is Friday 20th December 2024. Please note that there could be delays with couriers over the festive period.

We thank you for your continued business throughout the year and look forward to working with you in 2025. We wish you a very Merry Christmas & Happy New Year. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you need us.

We stock an extensive range of Special Import Products. These all require a valid Special Import Certificate – SIC – to enable us to supply the product to our client (registered UK veterinary surgeons only). This is easily applied for using the online VMD (Veterinary Medicines Directorate)  Special Import Scheme Home Page.

All our registered veterinary surgeons are reminded that the prescribing vet is personally responsible for the choice of product and, as part of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) Code of Professional Conduct for Veterinary Surgeons, must obtain the owner’s consent for their animal to be treated under the cascade. They must also maintain accurate records.

Food-Producing Animals – Setting withdrawal periods

A withdrawal period is the length of time that must lapse between the final administration of the medicine and the point the animal can be slaughtered to enter the food chain or when produce is taken.

The prescribing vet is required to specify an appropriate withdrawal period when prescribing or administering a medicine to food-producing animals under the cascade. When setting the withdrawal period, the vet must take into account known information about the use of the product on the authorised species when prescribing for another species.

If a product is used as authorised, for example, use of an imported product from another member state, the authorised withdrawal period should be followed.

Where the product is not used as authorised, for example, when a higher dose is used, or a species for which the product is not indicated is treated, then care needs to be taken to ensure that a suitable withdrawal period is set. This ensures that no residues of veterinary medicines above the maximum residue limit remain at the time of slaughter or when produce is taken.

The minimum statutory withdrawal periods are:

For use in GB

Eggs

  • the longest withdrawal period provided in the SPC for any species multiplied by a factor of 1.5
  • 14 days, if the product is not authorised for animals producing eggs for human consumption

Milk

  • the longest withdrawal period provided in the SPC for any species multiplied by a factor of 1.5
  • 7 days, if the product is not authorised for animals producing milk for human consumption
  • 1 day, if the product has a zero-hour withdrawal period

Meat and offal from food-producing mammals, poultry and farmed game-birds

  • the longest withdrawal period provided in the SPC for meat and offal, multiplied by a factor of 1.5
  • 28 days, if the product is not authorised for food-producing animals
  • 1 day, if the product has a zero-day withdrawal period

Fish meat

  • the longest withdrawal period for any of the aquatic species in the SPC multiplied by a factor of 1.5 and expressed as degree-days
  • if the product is authorised for food-producing terrestrial animal species, the longest withdrawal period for any of the food-producing animal species in the SPC multiplied by a factor of 50 and expressed as degree-days
  • 25 degree-days if the highest withdrawal period for any animal species is zero

For use in NI

Eggs

  • the longest withdrawal period provided in the SPC for any species multiplied by a factor of 1.5
  • 10 days, if the product is not authorised for animals producing eggs for human consumption

If the calculation of a withdrawal period results in a fraction of days, the withdrawal period must be rounded to the nearest number of days, with any half of a day being rounded upwards.

In relation to the calculation of the withdrawal period for milk, if the calculation of the period results in a milk withdrawal period not divisible by 12, the withdrawal period must be rounded up to the nearest multiple of 12 hours.

However, in cases where the authorised withdrawal periods are close to, or longer than, the ‘statutory minimum’ withdrawal periods, the vet should consider other factors when setting a suitable withdrawal period. Factors to consider include:

  • The length of the authorised withdrawal period(s)
  • The known pharmacokinetics of the active substance(s) in both the authorised species and the species being treated (if different)

The vet could, for example, increase the authorised withdrawal period by 50% (where a 30 day withdrawal period is authorised in cattle (meat and offal), a 45 day withdrawal period might be suitable for goats).  If a higher dose is given, then a longer period may be warranted.

(Please see the VMD website for full details on prescribing.)

About Relyne:

Recommended by vets and professional riders, RelyneGI is a 100% natural formula of hyaluronic acid and beta glucan that supports healthy digestion in horses. Our new RelyneGI is now made with TBG-136™ Schizophyllan, an immune-boosting Beta Glucan that stimulates the immune system to work on targeted areas of the horse’s stomach. The high molecular weight hyaluronan coats and protects the stomach’s lining. It’s odourless and tasteless for adding to feed and offers long-term support for all horses in maintaining normal gastric function and promoting well-being in equine athletes.

Relyne aids in promoting gastric well-being in horses that may not respond to traditional therapies. Relyne is safe for continuous daily use while promoting healthy stomach pH and digestion. It does not alter gastric pH like PPIs and H2 blockers and therefore does not affect digestion and nutrient absorption. Ideal for long-term use in horses with risk factors for gastric discomfort. Relyne can be used in conjunction with other gastroprotectants, medications and supplements, making it an ideal choice for challenging cases.
